Let’s Practice!
Using Chicago Illinois as our proposed city let’s look at
what the block by block data explorer can tell us.
Click on the link above and locate Chicago by dragging
the map, zoom in and roll your cursor until you find
Census TRACT 814 if you are having trouble finding the
TRACTS look at the screen shots folder above.
TRACT 814 has a population of 10,237 people; 70%
White, 6% Black, 7% Hispanic, 14% Asian and 2%
other.
Now scroll over to TRACT 808 (again if you are having
trouble finding the TRACTS look at the attached screen
shots).
TRACT 808 has a population of 537 people; 11% White,
50% Black, 39% Hispanic, 0% Asian and 0% other.
The populations could not be less alike and the TRACTS
are only 1.5 miles apart.
Location, Location, Location; build it where the population
lives.
More data about the population:
If you click VIEW MORE MAPS close to where you typed
in the city you will see similar census information by
TRACT’s about household income, education and families.
(Again if you are having trouble finding the TRACTS look
at the attached screen shots

Now let’s turn to the U.S. Census Bureau – Search Example.
Similar to the block by block population data tool the
census provides even more detailed information about a
geographic area.
Click on the census link and Select Illinois from the drop
down screen and click GO
From the CITY drop down screen select Chicago City and
click GO.
This search provides you with an overall comparison of
Chicago as compared to the entire state of Illinois.
What we really would like is a little more detail broken
down by demographics.
Near the top of the page above the two column statistics is
this statement:
Want more? Browse data sets for Chicago (city)
When you click this you get a series of more detailed
reports about this population such as:
• American Community Survey:
Estimates based on a sample of households over a 5-year
period:
Social Characteristics
Economic Characteristics
Housing Characteristics
Demographic Characteristics
• Demographic profile from the 2010 Census:
Demographic Profile
20 to 24 years
223,027

25 to 29 years
276,139

6.6
45 to 49 years
171,862
6.4

filter the results. In the age example above for Chicago
city you may take this grouping and just say that 223,027
of the population 8.3% are between 20 and 24 years of
age.
If you have identified your target customer between 25
and 50 years of age, as an example. What you should
report is that 39.5% or 1,065,552 people are between the
age of 25 and 49 year of age. Then you would go on to
provide the other demographics such as gender, income,
marital status and similar relevant data in a combined
range. Using a summary table to communicate and
display this meaningful data is preferred.
