Which of the four elements of emotional intelligence is most essential to an effective leader? The four elements of emotional intelligence are self-awareness, self-management, social awareness and relationship management. The most essential one, to me, to be an effective leader is social awareness. Why? Because you need to have the ability to recognize and serve the needs of the employees, your customers and clients. Without this essential effect, the leader would not be able to use the other 3 emotional intelligence. As a leader, you need to be able to know the facts about your employees, what your customers and clients are looking for is an organization that know their needs and wants and can supply those to them without them even having to ask for them.Tell your peers about how you have used this element of emotional intelligence. I have worked in clinical research for over 25 years. One thing that works for me is knowing what I am doing and who would best benefit from the studies I am helping to run. The first thing I always tell a patient is that if my doctor did not feel that you could benefit from the procedure we will be doing in the study, then we would not ask them to join. I reassure the patient that if you were my father or mother and they had this type of problem and I knew it could help, I would have them join. I understand my patients are like my employees, I want them to feel comfortable doing what is asked of them and knowing I am there for them. My sponsor is my client, they want to make sure I am doing what they want me to do and achieving the goal they set for my but putting the correct patients into their study. Working with VA patients motivates my doctor and myself to find those people that will benefit from what we can share with them. The patients see the passion and motivation that my doctor and I show towards them and know they are in good hands.Reference:Daft, R. L. (2018). The leadership experience (7th ed.). Being emotionally intelligent, Crowne et al. (2017) observe that it will refer to leaders who like the ability to manage our relationships as well as ourselves. It impacts leadership since effective leaders must be in a position to effectively manage them to be in a position to lead others. Leaders need therefore to be in an area have more time spent in developing their emotional intelligence to be favorable to their subordinate as well as their clients. Leaders must be in a position to create a special relationship with everyone in the working place and be in a position to develop productive relationship either in a partial level or in an emotionally intelligent manner to a positive impact on others.Leaders, therefore, need to handle the emotional aspect of our through active perceptions, understanding, as well as successfully manage their emotions for themselves and work imperatively on developing the best and stronger working relationship and also be in a position to attain their success. The four elements of emotional intelligence include self-management, relationship-management, self-awareness, and social awareness. As observed by Segon & Booth (2015), social awareness according to me is the most important. It is useful in helping the managers to have understanding others and enable them to act the way they operate. The effective in assisting sympathetic others in the way they do. An effective manger as the capacity to understand what people are managing as well as keeping the more motivated. Sufficient understanding, therefore, will enable the manager to whether an employee has an internal or an external locus. The elements, accordingly, position the manager in a place where they can have better communications which create motivation as well as leading the employee. ReferencesSegon, M., & Booth, C. (2015). Why?Emotional intelligence is a person’s ability to perceive, identify, understand, and successfully manage the emotions of others as well as themselves (Daft, 2018). One of the most essential parts of being an effective leader is sustaining control over your emotions, as this has the greatest impact on relationships. Emotions influence performance because people tend to project either positive or negative behavior based on the mood of others around them. The four elements of emotional intelligence are self-awareness, self-management, social awareness, and relationship management (Daft, 2018). Of the four elements, having the ability to manage one’s own emotions is essential to being an effective leader. Self-management is the ability to control disruptive or harmful emotions (Daft, 2018). Unfortunately, negative behavior has a greater impact toward the team than positive attitudes. Being able to manage those emotions can be an instrumental part of leading a team toward overcoming obstacles, implementing change, and building morale.Tell your peers about how you have used this element of emotional intelligence.I have used this element of emotional intelligence while leading my own team. The ability to self-manage impulses and behavior decreases a reactive approach to conflicts or challenges. I have had the desire to make decisions in the heat of the moment, which in the long run would not be in the best interest of the team, and would only satisfy my own need in the moment. I manage a team of customer service focused individuals who have to have the ability to manage their impulse behavior when presented with challenging situations. I do my best to lead by example by keeping my emotions in check and having a more proactive approach. If the leader is calm the team is calm.ReferencesDaft, R. L. (2018). Do you agree? Should leaders put business issues or ethical issues first? What would you do, and why? Provide rationale for your answer.Student Reply 4: Amanda PurvisI do not agree that corporate governance and social responsibility are distracting leaders from serving customers and beating competitors. All of these pieces of maintaining a business should be considered, and should ideally be equally as important. It is true that a business cannot function without its customers (i.e. income), but a business also cannot function without the employees there to do the work Additionally, unethical decision making at the corporate level can often lead to chaos. As our text mentions, “leading up to and during the 2008 housing and financial crisis, leaders at Standard & Poor’s, the ratings agency, were reported to have ignored ethical danger signals and chosen to put short term interests ahead of truthful ratings in order to produce ratings that were desired by banks putting together mortgage deals” (Daft, 2018). The overwhelming interest in the bottom line over acting ethically resulted in a civil suit, and contributed to the worldwide financial crisis that ensued (Daft, 2018). Had these employees chosen to act in an ethical way and report true and accurate ratings, they could have contributed to either identifying the pending financial crisis earlier, or in potentially lessening the impact of the crisis.I live by my own personal moral standards, to behave ethically and make conscious decisions at all times. I would choose ethics over the bottom-dollar every time, because I still have to live with the decisions I’ve made–so I’d like them to be good ones. In my opinion, valuing money over people wouldn’t allow me to sleep at night.ReferencesDaft, R. L. (2018). The leadership experience (7th ed.). I would have to disagree with the consultants involved in this study. Leaders have to stay mindful of the core responsibilities which is serving customers and being competitive. If you loose sight of these major business concepts the business will suffer. When a leader is in a position to lead others they have to be able to understand the end result which is a successful business and understanding that the only way to get there is through their followers. By choosing ethical choices and leading a team the right way you can manage both business and ethical issues. According to the text sticking to one’s core values in the face of pressure is one key part of leading authentically and ethically .( Daft, R. L. (2018)) Business issues are very important and critical to the bottom line of the company. Business issues are very stressful and can be a lot for leadership to Handel. I would focus on ethical issues and work at balance because I think that they go hand and hand and will eventually need both to be successful. Daft, R. L. (2018). The leadership experience (7th ed.). Retrieved from https://content.ashford.edu/ Student Reply 6: Michael DawsonBased on the hypothetical situation, I do not agree with the consultant’s argument and the emphasis of corporate governance and social responsibility has distracted leaders from key business issues such as, serving customers and beating competitors. I also do not believe business issues should come before ethical issues. Richard Daft states, Leaders face many pressures that challenge their ability to do the right thing. The most dangerous obstacles for leaders are personal weakness and self-interest rather than full-scale corruption. Also, another challenge in today’s business environment is an overemphasis on pleasing shareholders, which may cause some managers to behave unethically toward customers, employees, and the broader society. Lastly, if a leader knows someone is being treated unfairly by a colleague and does nothing, the leader is setting a precedent for others to behave unfairly as well. Peers and subordinates with lax ethical standards feel free to act as they choose (Daft, 2018). I believe business issues are important, otherwise, there would be no purpose for that business. However, it is not more important than morality. What tends to be forgotten by leaders is that business is values. So, for moral leaders it does not mean ignoring profit and loss, share price, production costs, and other hard, measurable facts, but it does require recognizing and adhering to ethical values and acknowledging the importance of human meaning, quality, and higher purpose (Daft, 2018).I first would start off by asking two question. First, why was the business started or built on? Second, what is driving factor of the business? With these two question, you can evaluate what the company’s purpose and ultimately, what matters to them the most. Business issues or Ethic issues. Ethical leaders will be able to run a company, manage employees, and build customer relationship without forgoing morality. If they are about maintain their values then profits will not be an issue. If they are worried about competitors, the company itself, internally and externally will beat them. This is the approach I would take and be that ethical leader. Henry Ford’s century-old comment seems tailor-made for today’s poor ethical climate: “For a long time people believed that the only purpose of industry was to make a profit. They are wrong. Its purpose is to serve the general welfare.” (Daft, 2018)ReferenceDaft, R. L. (2018). The leadership experience (7th Ed.).
