Health educators are charged with the responsibility of ensuring that health communication
plans are effective and successful at educating and sensitizing members of the public over various
health issues. When developing such a program, they must also consider the needs of the audience
in terms of literacy levels so as to improve the understandability of the information that is contained
in the health communication campaign (Pawlak). Audience receptivity determines the impact that
the health campaign has on achievability of the healthcare outcomes that are being disseminated
to the public. Educators of these campaigns must thereby assess literature reviews of health
campaigns that have been effective in the past so as to apply them in their campaigns. The aim of
this assignment is to assess ways of addressing low health literacy when designing health
communications.
The health communication camping that is being developed is one that is aimed at
educating the members of the public on prevention of HIV/AIDS. As earlier mentioned,
HIV/AIDS interferes with the ability of the body to fight infections. In the United States, over one
million people live with the ailment. Out of this population, 15% are unaware that they suffer from
the ailment. The new infections have also been increasing with over 300,000 people being infected
with the disease in 2018. Currently, the various health communication on prevention of HIV/AIDS
have been observed to be ineffective in allowing members of the public to gain necessary
information on the strategies they can adopt to prevent infection. Low literacy levels among the
population are still a huge impediment that reduces the effectiveness of health communication
campaigns in the country.
Health literacy is defined as the degree to which members of the public or the audience is
able to obtain, process, and understand health information that is contained or disseminated

through various health programs and campaigns (Huang). There are several ways that can be
adopted by health educators to address low health literacy when designing various health
communication campaigns. One of the major ways to address low literacy in such campaigns is
through ensuring that there is sufficient clarity in the messages that are relayed to the people in the
society. Improving the clarity can happen through reducing the use of medical jargon, use of simple
and easy to understand words, and defining the various healthcare delivery systems. The use of
medical jargon often demoralizes individuals who may lack the capability to understand the
meaning of the terms that are used by the health educators.
The solution also includes using easy to understand words in the place of medical jargon.
Many members of the public would thereby understand the importance of the campaign and what
strategies they can adopt to ensure that they are not infected with HIV/AIDS. Defining the
healthcare delivery systems could also allow the people to be more interested in the campaign and
this may lead to achievement of the health communication campaign. This goal can only happen
if the health educators are able to determine the literacy levels of various populations within the
society. The second strategy that can be adopted to address low literacy levels is through
conducting health literacy assessments in each community. Doing this may help determine what
strategies can be adopted by the health educators in the health communication campaign.
There are several strategies that can be employed by health educators to ensure that their
health communication campaigns are effective. These strategies not only relate to health literacy
but have a wider spectrum which can determine the success or failure of the health communication
campaign. In this case, the health communication campaign on HIV/AIDS is through mass media.
Mass media refers to communication to large groups of people through television, radio, and
newspapers. The first strategy is to ensure that the health communication campaign is easily

accessible by the people. Such accessibility can be guaranteed by using platforms that are bound
to reach the highest proportion of the population. In this case, mass media is a very effective
platform since it will reach more people than any other communication tool that is available. Such
a platform will also ensure that the campaign gains great viewership by the intended audience.
The second strategy is to ensure that the health communication campaign is credible. One
of the biggest issues that affect the success of these plans is lack of credibility. Credibility can be
created through ensuring that all the individuals working in the campaign have attained the
required qualifications and competencies to offer health information to members of the public
(Friedman). The members of the public can only trust the campaign if the information that is being
shared is credible. The health educators can also ensure such credibility through guaranteeing that
there is informational and technical accuracy in all the information that is being disseminated
through the communication campaign. Transparency in the communications can also help create
credibility about the campaign. Proper coordination with the various partners may also play a great
role towards ensuring that all the information that is circulated is true and in line with the best
practices in regards to HIV/AIDS prevention.
Another strategy that may be adopted by the health educators who are developing the health
communication campaign on HIV/AIDS is to ensure that everything in the campaign is easily
understandable. As earlier mentioned, the literacy levels in the society today are not in line with
enabling people to understand some of the medical jargon. The health educators can guarantee this
through ensuring that only plain language is used, telling real stories about HIV/AIDS, using
visuals when communicating the health information, and using language that is familiar by the
audience. These strategies if properly put in place, they can go a long way towards ensuring that
the communicated message is properly understood by the audiences. The elderly are particularly

a vulnerable group when it comes to understanding the health communication campaign. The
health educators need to use interpreters and always ensure that they use simple language when
conversing with them.
In conclusion, health communication campaigns are essential in any society that wants to
tackle some of the ailments that affect the people. In this case, HIV/AIDS has many effects on the
people. However, since there have been very few effective campaigns, its prevalence continues to
be considerably high in some of the communities across the country. The strategies developed
above can go a long way towards ensuring that various healthcare outcomes are met. Brining
members of the public on board ensures that health information is disseminated and this improves
the achievability of various healthcare outcomes at the societal level.

world but also in the developed world. Therefore, relaying the information is relevant especially
for the teenage in the developed world who have the tendency to binge everything they come
across. With the escalated HIV infections in the United States of America, there comes the need
to make a reminder to all the binge everything teenagers out there. Teenagers have always been
inclined to practice risky behavior.
The media on the anatomy of HIV and AIDS has been done via the means of a trifold
brochure after the contemplation stage of change. To ensure a high degree of efficacy, the brochure
should focus on the target audience which is set as a general mass of adults both in the social,
relational communities and at the same time, worship the novel emerging trends in the
methodology of going about in life as well as behavior inclined to abnormal sexuality.
This brochure analyzes to a certain depth the anatomy of HIV and AIDS, causes,
prevention, assumptions made, statistics and facts. The cover page has causes, statistics, and
prevention. The dominant color on the cover page is red, the color of danger which acts as
cautioning symbolism in the paper. The red color also helps to set in the gravity of the aura that
surrounds this social and biological issue of life.
The inner phase of the brochure with the facts, assumptions and the catchphrase has a green
background. The green color is always used symbolically to denote life. Yes. Life after first
adhering to the reality of HIV and AIDS in the community and the only way to counter it is by
remaining vigilant and cautious of our own behaviors and actions to care for the ones, we love

it is placed to denote the responsibilities that should be adhered to by all adults in positions such
as parents, counselors and any other older peer for the binge generation, misinformed on HIV and
AIDS as well as the upcoming generations.
The brochure also offers information on the location where one can receive free screening
and HIV treatment. The descriptions include an email, a local cell number as well as the location

The fear appeal message that is represented in the picture is meant to pass the message to
all people who are not infected with the virus that once infected then there is no cure or in other
words that being positive is a permanent status while being negative is a temporary status. The
notion means that once you are infected, you can’t turn negative again and also that the people
who are currently positive at some point in their lives had a negative status.
The fear appeal method used in this picture is a representation of regret, this message is
coming from a HIV positive person whose condition makes him/her regret his past actions which
contributed directly to their infection. The message here is a warning to those who are not
infected to change their behavior or take precautionary measures since the threat of infection is
real and that in the current world no cure is known which can reverse the status.
The message affects the target population in that it arouses a fear which entails the
audience to avoid behaviors which might lead to infections. The message is beneficial for
teenagers and school going kids who have their whole lives ahead of them, for them an infection
with HIV would mean losing the appeal of life, and all that one has worked so hard to achieve.
This message emphasizes that the only viable method of protection is to make sure you are not
infected.
In my health campaign appeals, I would use this message on badges worn by the
campaign members to arise the notion on the audience that we the wearers are infected and
further put the audience on the alert since infected people look as healthy as the rest. The
message can also be placed on posters which are then placed on different places at schools and
public places.
