classes) useful in understanding and becoming successful in your chosen career/academic discipline?
• What controversy or debate exists in your field that you need to know how to navigate and
weigh in on?
• What expectations are there in your field that require you to be rhetorically conscious?
• How does rhetorical knowledge help you be successful in doing this?
Research Requirements:
To make this project engaging, you will need to research multimedia/internet sources to find examples
from your academic/career discipline that can benefit from application of the skills from our course and
the overall goals of Rhetoric.
• 4 total sources from professional, scholarly, or reputable sources.
• Links to multimedia must be incorporated/embedded into your writing as hyperlinks, placed
appropriately, and be correctly linked.
All sources must be “cited” through integrated and embedded hyperlinks. All material must be
reputable, engaging, and current (no more than 2 years old). They can be scholarly articles,
editorial/opinion articles, youtube videos, TEDTalks, or other trade/industry related media. They should
be used to illustrate your ideas.
Audience: Your intended audience is a group of your peers, though you may decide if they are an insider
or outsider audience. Your decision here will change the way you plan and write your project.
Length: Minimum 1000 words.
Structure: You must write your reflection in paragraph form, framed with clear introduction and
conclusion paragraphs. It should also have a clear thesis statement at the end of the introduction that
establishes the main argument and purpose of your reflection. You may have as many body paragraphs
as you’d like, depending on your content and organization, though you may have no less than 3.
Format/Genre: You will submit your work digitally via the Blog function on Blackboard. Write your
content in Word to use their editing/formatting functions, but copy/paste into the text into the
Blackboard system. You may write your reflection using an academic essay structure (intro, 3 body
paragraphs, conclusion) or a more informal blog style (shorter, choppier paragraphs but more of them,
informal and engaging style), or in a format/genre that is appropriate to your academic/professional
discipline.
Tasks Required:

o Explanation of the surrounding context of a problem or situation that has led to
controversy in your field, including time frames, historical/political/social influences,
and the predominant concerns
• Section One:
o Explanation of one side of the controversy/debate, using at least TWO sources.
Analysis of this position, discussing how awareness of discourse community, values,
biases, assumptions, and preferred rhetorical appeals of this position help us
understand WHY and HOW this argument is supported.
Section Two:
o Explanation of the second side of this controversy/debate, using at least ONE source.
o Analysis of this position, discussing discourse community, values, biases, assumptions,
and dominant rhetorical appeals help us better understand not only why and how this
argument is build but how it is designed IN RESPONSE to position/community #1
Section 3:
o Your thoughts/contribution to the topic. Basically, after analyzing the rhetoric of both
sides and using it to understand the motivations and appeals of each, what have you
realized?

Why Science is important?
Science is a systematic way that involves observation and experimentation in order to get
knowledge and improve the quality of life. Science research is very important because the
research that is being conducted every day by scientists improves the world and makes it better.
Science is discovering and finding new things in the world and conducting studies to make it
better. It all got started with discovering something new; then studying what it can be capable of
and seeing where this new-founded information can fit.
How Scientist research can make a big difference?
Without the study and effort from previous generations of scientists, the technology that people
enjoy would not be here. It becomes very necessary for other countries to grow in the same way
to be strong and well developed for future safety and security. Conducting environmental
research studies is very important to make the environment better and to understand when
pollution happens. The new Trump plan that made cuts to some federal science agencies affected
12 research programs agencies, such as the ARPA-E (Advanced Research Projects AgencyEnergy), the NOAA (National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration), and the
EPA(Environmental Protection Agency). Science research can be beneficial to energy efficiency,
pollution reduction, and environmental protection. Continuing funding research programs is
important for improving our daily life by finding solutions.

How can scientists help to reduce air pollution:
Scientist can make a tremendous different through research. Scientist can be the first source to
reduce air pollution through continuous research. Scientist can introduce new machines that can
help reduce air pollution and make the environment better. Through research and conducting
many experiments they can reach or find a solution.
Trump new plan to reduce funding on research:
The Trump plan would cut $776 million, an 11 percent reduction from the foundation, which
gives grants for nonmedical research in science and engineering (Hand). Scientific research
shows that reductions in air pollution are associated with widespread public health benefits, and
lowers air pollution levels, which means less damage to the health of ecosystems (Progress
Cleaning the Air and Improving People’s Health). Lastly, the facts show that between 30 and 40
percent of the food supply results in waste and food waste is the most common component that
can make pollution. In fact, a recent study in the Journal of the Academy of Nutrition and
Dietetics found that on average more than 1,200 calories per person per day are wasted across
the country (Weintraub). These facts and statistics diverge from sources from news articles and
scholarly studies clearly indicate that environmental research is improving the earth and daily
life through the research that is being conducted every day by the scientists. We must continue
funding environmental scientists to combat air pollution as well as specified. Continuing funding
of research programs is a way to keep the environment healthy and to make the environment
better.

appeals/techniques that are used to make that plan
persuasive.
Part 2: The responses. Who disagrees with the plan, how
and why? What rhetorical techniques do they use to
support their side?
Part 3: Your point, a source to support it, and analysis of
why/how you came to this opinion.

How Trump plan can affect those agencies:
The President Trump plan proposes to cut funding on science research. The first most affected
program is ARPA-E (Advanced Research Projects Agency-Energy). The Advanced Research
Projects Agency-Energy (ARPA-E) advanced high-potential, high-impact energy technologies
that are too early for private sector investment (ARPA-E Changing What’s Possible). ARPA-E
awards are unique because they are developing entirely new ways to generate, store, and use
energy. President Donald Trump’s budget would make huge cuts in renewable energy research
and eliminate agencies within the Department of Energy that fund energy technology projects.
The environment will be better by 24% and it will help lower energy. It’s important to keep
funding these kinds of research programs because it’s a way that can save energy and help the
environment. Our environment is important and funding any research program to help our
environment stay healthy and avoid any damages. Any damages on the environment can affect
our health. Protecting and supporting scientist to keep on conducting research will help us
continue on having a healthy environment.
Scientists are working continuously to serve humanity by increasing their control over the world
and its environment. President Trump made several changes that will affect scientists and
scientific research. The second most affected science research was NOAA Sea Grant. The budget
proposal would reduce NOAA’s budget by 4% (Science News Staff). Beyond Sea Grant, the cuts
would target grants and programs that support coastal and marine management, research, and
education, which are a lower priority, the budget request states. This would have a big effect and
the government should encourage and support scientists to continue by raising their funds, not by
cutting their funds. The cut on NOAA agency can effect on the studies of the structure and
behavior of the ocean, atmosphere, and related ecosystems. Environmental research is very
important; it’s research that publishes original reports that are describing studies of the opposing
effects of environmental agents on humans and animals.
My opinion:
Scientific knowledge makes us understand how continuous changes have caused air pollution to
happen, altering the climate of the world. It is important to continue doing research to know the
cause and finding solutions. According to the article, “Increased Risk of Air Pollution Exposure
in our homes: Study, written by Emily Lunardo. Air pollution levels expectedly rise in densely
populated areas, such as big cities. Keep funding the agencies and scientist can make our world
better. As a biology student major, volunteering in a lab. I can already see how much impact
students put to find a solution. Scientist might fail couple of times, but with continues research
and commitment will lead them to the solution or point they want to reach.
Conclusion:
science is all about collecting information to gain knowledge. Information collected is used to
replace old ideas with new ones. Whether the discovery is 300 years old, 100 years old, or
present, it’s science, nonetheless. Science is to discover information about the natural world, and
even about space, to help us understand our existence. Becoming a scientist in the future, I want
to develop a systematic approach to creating awareness and experiments that will benefit the
environment and people. The point is that keep on researching and discovering things that will
